The most valuable software in my studio in not pro tools or my favorite EQ plugin. It is Carbon Copy Cloner. Sound crazy? Watch the video to find out why I think so.
Before anyone asks, I have no relationship with the people that make Carbon Copy Cloner. Another good program to do with is Super Duper, but I prefer the feature set in Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you are looking for some extra reading, I am featured in an in depth interview with the folks at the Plugin Alliance. Read it here
The saying I like is,
“If it’s not backed up, it doesn’t exist”.
Thanks Ronan and John. I hope people follow this priceless advice.
Cheers,
Joey
Just looked at Carbon CC. It appears to be Mac only. I’m W7 based. I use Acronis software for backups/cloning.
Also the last few Seagate/Maxtor HD’s I purchased came with free versions of DiscWizard which will do backups…but I don’t think DiscWizard (free version) will clone.

Invaluable advice. I had no idea this was out there. Thanks–you just solved a big problem for me and my hardworking Mac.
I get the idea of cloning/coping everything… what I’m not sure I understand is, when I have cloned/copied everything I have so far and I do some updated editing in my DAW, do I need to re-clone/Copy again, and if so, does it overwrite the last clone/copy I made, or does it re write another whole file? Seems this would take up a lot of hard drive space pretty quickly? I would prefer to just re write over the last clone to stay current. Is that possible?
If you have a registered version of Carbon Copy Cloner, when you make an update, it only updates the things you changed, so many updates take only seconds or minutes.
Wisdom delivered in a really entertaining way man! Thanks!
I have one dayly timemachinebackup sitting in the Studio and one dayly timemachinebackup sitting at home 🙂
It s usb 3 and takes 5 min even for GB Monsters, as I work in 96khz a lot.

Hey Ronan
Brilliant! Having crashed your system one of those times last year I can attest to how thankful we are that you use this system [yay!!]
CCC is for Macs. Can you tell us if this Casper produst is an acceptable replacement for W7?:

$50. Only $10 more than the CCC.
Also, I saw these on the Sweetwater site, Would this work with the software to make 3 at once?

Or This type for 4 or more:

Again, a COMPLETELY useful piece of info—as usual.

Thanks Ronan,
This was very helpful. I’m collecting my pennies now.
