“Because of [ your course ] I did new mixes of two songs. I completely threw away everything I did before and re-did everything thinking about what I learned from you. The result was very impressive and when the singer came over to the studio and heard the new version he got really excited and started phoning every member of the band and telling them “Hey Guys, we’ve got the best sound we’ve ever had and we are ready to send this sh*t to a label” Angelo. Vicenza, Italy

“Very educational and enlightening.” -Julian, Orange County, CA

“Anyone that wants to make better recordings and buys a new piece of gear instead of taking one of Ronan’s courses is crazy.” -Bob. San Diego, CA

“In all honesty, I would have to say that the most important thing I took away from your boot camp is the one thing I needed most and didn’t have, something lacking that was really holding me back: confidence. The balls to say “yeah, I could do that” to people, just jump into realms that I might not have even experienced before and flat out get some work done. I appreciate it, Ronan. I think you’ve got a cool thing going with the boot camps.” -Brian, Osh Kosh, WI

“My music is sound 10 times better post boot camp. It’s so odd that I have to be trained to used my ears, but I do. I can’t thank you enough.” -Dusty, Oklahoma.

?Had a great time, and am already applying all the awesome wisdom we learned. Your approach, showcasing the effectiveness of simple proven techniques, not forgetting the importance of feel and ear, and your emphasis on making “real” what happens in front of the microphone instead of getting caught up in all the gadgetry and techno-babble will serve me well in the years to come and give me a solid foundation to build on in my career as a music professional. My recordings sound worlds better already. – JP, Tidewater, VA

“I’ve just completed a 6 day course of learning how to make great records at Ronan Chris Murphy’s Home Recording Boot Camp at Culver City in LA and now realise how I need to approach my future recordings. The course is intended to get you to make great sounding records when you don’t have access to a commercial studio. Ronan is producer/engineer to King Crimson, Robert Fripp, Tony Levin, Tom McRae among other top major label names. I’d recommend anyone who’s serious about making records to get on to one of these courses.

I made the long trip to LA because I couldn’t find anything similar in Europe. (Incidentally, he does the occasional course in Padua, Italy when his schedule allows).

The thing I like about this guy is that he understands the fundamentals – not the math necessarily, but the practicalities of making a great recording and the vast importance of the ‘front end’ over the relatively less important detail of software, plug-ins etc. Getting it right at the front end is of paramount importance; great writing; having the act motivated to give a great performance; micing techniques (how to place those mics) and understanding why you’re micing a certain way for guitar, piano, vocal, bass and drums (choice of mic., overdrive, gain, levels, phase separation, proximity effects – and how to use them creatively – all before you’ve even touched an EQ on the desk); how to evaluate equipment mics and pre-amps; compression and how to use it creatively; mixing and mastering. Mixing is the last item on the course and if you do it, you’ll find everthing falling into place on the last day when mixing techniques are shown. No amount of pro-tools wizardry or clever plug-ins will repair a bad recording. Ronan doesn’t preach a standard philosphy (other than “red is bad” in recording-speak), but encourgaes you to experiment and find the sound you like or that suits best the act you’re trying to produce. No bull. This is my kind of guy.

What he doesn’t know, he’ll bring in guys from the outside. He brought in John Rodd (soundtrack engineer on a whole host of Hollywood cinema productions – notably Planet of the Apes), ex-Sony mastering engineer Stephen Marsh and top mic and pre-amp designers (Dave Pearlman and Peter Montessi respectively) to give us their expertise.

If you’re a gear geek, you’ll probably love this. However, most importantly Ronan puts it across so that you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand all this. Why? Because it really is very simple (not to be confused with ‘easy’), but if you don’t know what you’re doing and why, you can really mess your recording up big time. If you want to make good records, whether you’re an artist, writer, sound guy whatever, I can’t recommend this course strongly enough. It’s a must.

There were six of us students in total in the class. A great time was had by all and a lot of good things learned too. And “it never rains in Southern California”……….” – Jim, Portugal (via his myspace blog)

?Boot Camp was really great for me. I know engineering is a long road, just like any other, but I do feel better prepared and more educated than I had been. You really introduced and drove home some simple, basic principles and techniques that I have already incorporated into my productions. I feel more confident and I am not afraid to experiment? ? Kyle, Hollywood, CA

I have to say [Home Reocording Boot Camp] was by far the best money I’ve invested in recording thus far. In fact, the confidence it gave gave me help get me a job at a local studio. You rock Ronan! -Lee, Winnipeg, Canada

?I recently went to Ronan Chris Murphy’s Home Recording Boot Camp in Los Angeles (http://www.recordingbootcamp.com) and wanted to let you know it’s great. Ronan holds the sessions for 6 attendees in his studio and the class lasts 6 days. He presented a ton of information in that time and what’s cool is that it was very well structured but there was also plenty of space for Q&A as well as open discussion. Plus, it was the right blend of lecture/talk and hands-on activities so it wasn’t all theory and it wasn’t just watching a session happen either – it’s very interactive.

One thing to point out is it’s not a recording 101 class – it’s geared more for people who know how to do things in their own studios but would really like to step up their game. In fact, there is a short phone interview before signing up to help ensure there is a good fit for the student and the program. There weren’t any brainbusters in the interview and it wasn’t terrifying – just some discussion to make sure the attendees have a base level of knowledge. I think it helps because the other guys in the session I went to were great. A few owned their own small studios, and some were singers or songwriters who wanted to make recordings better for themselves.

The agenda is what you might expect for a recording program, but there’s more to it than that. Besides learning how to record different instruments, miking techniques, mixing, etc., I found the real value to be in hearing directly from, and talking with, Ronan about his approach/thought process to each element along the way. You can read about all this stuff and do it regularly in your own studio, but having someone like Ronan talk about what he does as well as why he does it is what makes this program unique. He also had a few guest speakers come in and they were great. For our session, Dave Pearlman (Pearlman Microphones) came in to talk about mics, Peter Montessi (A-Designs) came in to talk about pre-amps, eqs as well as some other gear and John Rodd (Orchestral Recording engineer for several huge movies and games) talked about miking techniques in a variety of environments. All of these guys were extremely knowledgeable and wide open to discussion.

Beyond all the solid learning about music and recording, the environment is extremely comfortable. Ronan is very friendly and fun to be around and by the afternoon of day 1, being there with him and the other guys was like hanging out in a really cool place with a bunch of friends learning more about something we all like. Also, Ronan’s manager Liz was available to help with logistics ahead of the session and kept helping us along the way.

Anyhow, I wanted to let fellow Tweakerz know that the Home Recording Boot Camp is a really special place and you might want to check it out – it’s also a lot of bang for the buck. I got the cleanest mix I’d ever done the day after I got back home from the session. I liked the fact that the class didn’t rely on everybody having the same DAW (the studio had ProTools, I have Cubase and some of other guys had different DAWs, but everything translated just fine) plus the things we learned didn’t rely on tons of plug-ins, effects, etc. The whole philosophy is based on learning how to make great recordings with whatever you have. It really helped me and I had fun.? Greg (posted on studio-central.com)
