Benny Greb & Ronan Chris Murphy talk drum recording philosophy

Drum Recording Philosophy with Benny Greb and Ronan Chris Murphy

This month, Benny Greb who is one of the best drummers and creative thinkers of the modern age is on the cover of Modern Drummer. I recorded with him a couple weeks ago at Prosdocimi Recording in North Italy. After the session I set up cameras to do a short video about the gear we used, but it turned into an in depth discussion about drum recording philosophy from a technical and creative perspective. One of the most interesting videos I have ever made.

If you like this you should definitely pick up has awesome new DVD, The art and science of groove and check him out in the new issue of Modern Drummer

Presenting a re-match of the IsoAcoustics Stands vs The BBQ Bible, and I test the IsoAcoustics Modular Aluminum System to see how it works with our 300 pound a piece mastering speakers. After a previous test of the ISO-L8R155 where the results ranged from awesome to not so awesome, Ronan Chris Murphy gives the stands another go with the new studio set up.

The most valuable software in my recording studio?

The most valuable software in my studio in not pro tools or my favorite EQ plugin. It is Carbon Copy Cloner. Sound crazy? Watch the video to find out why I think so.

Before anyone asks, I have no relationship with the people that make Carbon Copy Cloner. Another good program to do with is Super Duper, but I prefer the feature set in Carbon Copy Cloner.

If you are looking for some extra reading, I am featured in an in depth interview with the folks at the Plugin Alliance. Read it here

Gettin’ back that lovin’ feeling for your productions

We have all dealt with that feeling when we are crazy about our productions when we first start them, but then we fall a little less in love with them. If you are dealing with that, this video might help.

We still have a couple spots left in our April 6-day Recording Boot in Los Angeles

The John Bonham Drum Sound in Small Room with Plug-Ins?

The Bonham Drum Sound ?

While we would all love to be able to record John Bonham in a big room with nice room mics to get that “John Bonham drum sound,” the reality is we have the drummer we have, often recorded in a small room with only close mics. In a new video I show you some tricks you can easily do with plug-ins to help get your tracks closer to that classic sound.

If you are on Facebook come by and visit facebook.com/recordingbootcamp where I often post recording tips and behind the scenes info from my studio sessions.

Vocal Booths Suck. Why I am ripping out my vocal booth.

First off, the NAMM show is coming to Southern California this week. This is usually a great time to connect with a lot of you. Unfortunately I am out of town for a family emergency and will not be attending this year. I hope we can catch up soon.

In this new video I explain why vocal booths suck and why I am tearing mine out of the studio. If you dig it, please share it with your friends.

Thanks

Ronan

Changes in 2015 & $350 discount next month

Happy New Year!

2015 is going to see some big changes for Recording Boot Camp. We are expanding the program and making some big changes to how we present the material. I can not tell you the details yet (hint, it is going to get more intense, more in depth), but one thing that is going to happen is a price change to the six day Recording Boot Camp.

We have not raised the tuition since I started the program in 2003, but because of some of the staffing and class size issues with the new plans, it looks like the price is going to have to go up, probably by about 50%, so we are letting people know there are only a couple opportunities left to attend at the old prices and one opportunity at a super discount.

We have some space left in next months 6 day program (January 27- February 1 2015), and anyone that signs up can attend for $750, a savings of $350 off the current registration price.

After that we will probably do one more six day program in Los Angeles and are hoping to do another one in Europe, probably Italy, before we introduce the new course and the higher prices.

If you wonder what people think of our current program check out these student quotes. http://recordingbootcamp.com/about/student-quotes/

Thanks
Ronan
